SYDNEY FOOD ADVENTURES WEEK TWO

My second week in Sydney is over and I'm now sitting at home in New Zealand. I certianly excelled myself in the eating stakes the last week. Mostly aided by my lovely friend Jules we've managed to eat our way down the south coast of NSW, splurge on vino and seafood at Watsons bay, eat soft shell crab three times in a week Yum Cha, macaroons and lots of cocktails. I've had some fab breakfasts as well as amazing coffee where ever I've been. Im very spoilt.

Monday -  Kiama
A lovely seaside town an hour or so south of Sydney. We ate at a new Vietnamese restaurant Hanoi On Manning. Packed on a Monday night, thats always a good sign. The entree servings were rather generous we shared the Vietnamese pancake. For mains the soft shell crab with chilli and spring onion and the crispy skin chicken with plum sauce. Afterwards the owner sat down and had a glass of wine with us, it was a lovely friendly local restaurant doing a roaring trade in the town.

Tuesday - Brunch at the Sea Vista in Gerringong over looking the coastline.
This unassuming little cafe was even better than we expected. The ladies running the kitchen served us zucchini and corn fritters with smoked salmon and avocado, beautifully presented.
After brunch we travelled on to enjoy a beer at the Fishermans club over looking Seven Mile beach before working up an appetite for tea and cake.
Berry, our next destination was a cute little village filled with quirky homeware and antique shops. We stopped on the main road at The Emporium Food Co. for tea with ricotta and pear cake and white chocolate and berry baked cheesecake.

At this stage suffering a food coma and with the weather setting in we went back to our house to chill out with some beers and DVDs until the next day when the sun came out shining brightly!

Wednesday
We drove in to Kiama and stopped at the Manning Street cafe for breakfast. They served Campos coffee, my favourite from Sydney. The cafe has had mixed reviews on service but I loved the food. A classic eggs benedict for me and haloumi and snow pea fritters with poached eggs for Jules.

We drove back to Sydney in the afternoon catching the glorious sunset at Darling Harbour then venturing to Newtown for the first of my two soft shell crab yellow currys at Banks Thai on Enmore road.

Thursday
As the sun continued to shine I took a ferry across the absolutely stunning Sydney harbour, the bridge and the Opera house taking my breath away I skipped over to Watsons Bay. A lovely spot to sit looking back at the city across the water with a glass (or bottle) or wine and some seafood. Too late for lunch at Watsons Bay hotel and too early for dinner at Doyles I tried the take away at the wharf, it was spectacular. The baked salmon, grilled barramundi and calamari were fresh, melt in your mouth delicious.

Friday
At this stage I'm suffering a proper food (and drink) hangover. I kept it pretty simple and stopped in at Kawa on Crown Street in Surry Hills for a poached pear and vanilla bean frappe. So refreshing as I sat in the late afternoon sun and read a magazine. I felt really at home here.
A second dinner at Banks Thai in Newtown, eating once again the soft shell crab yellow curry and also my old favourite red duck curry with lychees. I love that they add lychee here, not everyone does this. Its a lovely flavour addition with duck.

Saturday
I was out early in Enmore and needed something fast. Coffee and breakfast at Scrambled on Enmore Rd. A cute little cafe with tables outside I sat and watched the early morning activities over a perfect flat white and a magazine. The menu had the usual suspects, eggs benny, french toast, pancakes etc. I ordered ricotta Turkish toast with poached fruits, cinnamon, chai and maple syrup. Wow. Naturally sweet apples, figs and apricots with the a salty nutty toast and hints of chai. Loved it. Im a sweet tooth and will often order the sweet for breakfast. I liked that this wasn't too overpowering like a pancake or french toast would be and oh so pretty.

Sunday
I topped off the week with the family and a proper barbee, pork chops, steak and snags.

Monday
Another Sydney staple, China town Yum Cha. Spinach and scallop dumpings, pork buns and sticky rice. Marigold on George street was in the top 5 on Timeout Sydneys list of Yum Cha restaurants so I thought I'd give it a go. Its on the 4&5th floor and must seat a couple of hundred. After walking off the steamed goodies we had a coffee and macaroon at the Lindt Cafe on Martin Place. Stawberry and Passionfruit macaroons, mmmm.

Tuesday
My final day in Sydney I finally ticked off walking the coastal path from Coogee beach to Bronte. It was a sunny blue sky day and its the most stunning walk. Food for the soul as I took in all the colours of the turquoise ocean, green grass and blue sky. Sydney has everything covered that makes me a happy person. I had a late lunch at Swell in Bronte. Ricotta gnocci with parmesan, artichokes and burnt sage butter. A wonderful way to enjoy my last day in sunny Sydney.

Finally we stumbled across a little bar on Crown street just off Oxford st, the Darlinghurst side, its called Pocket. They serve cocktails and crepes. Expensive cocktails at around $17 each but a nice treat for my last night. For the best value for money to alcohol ratio try the Knickerbocker Glory. Rum, Cointreau, lemon juice and pomegranate. The menu has a bunch of savoury and sweet crepe options, I ate the tarragon poached chicken crepe. A nice idea for something a bit different to meze platters and dips.

That pretty much tops off the list of things to eat in Sydney. I've certainly had my fair share. Now on to NZ and some home cooked dinners.
Until then!

Seriously B. The pictures of the Eggs Benedict just gave me a foodgasm REMEMBERING how easy and delicious they always were at home. Love this post. It makes me want to get home, drink coffee and eat Yum Cha every weekend again.
